JV Stallions Win Northern Conference; Advance to Championship

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varisty team defeated the North Halton Crimson Tide 22-18 in a hard fought contest to win the OFC’s Northern Conference and advance to the Championship game.  The Stallions have now placed a team in the Championship game in each of their six seasons in the OFC.  The game started with North Halton moving the ball well on the strength of their powerful running attack.

The Stallions managed to get a stop on second down and caught a break when a bad punt snap gave the home squad excellent field position.  Huronia’s offence capitalized with Nick Dejesus hitting Michael Tomczyk for a 20-yard touchdown pass.  North Halton once again marched down the field but were stopped on a critical third down in Stallions’ territory.  The offence responded with a 63-yard drive which culminated in a 10-yard run by Destin Pearson and a 13-0 advantage.  After another clutch third down stop by the Stallions’ defence, backup punter Justin Winn pinned North Halton deep with an excellent angled punt.  North Halton then punished the Stallions’ defenders with a long bruising drive which they converted for a touchdown.  A Stallions’ fumble gave North Halton the ball back and the rushing attack continued to gash the Stallions for big yards and another rushing touchdown.

North Halton decided to go for a two point conversion and failed keeping Huronia ahead 13-12 at the half.  After making an adjustment from a seven to an eight-man defensive front in the first half, the Stallions moved at halftime to a nine-man front to force North Halton to pass the football.  The change in front still had no effect as North Halton churned their way into the endzone for an 18-13 lead.  After North Halton conceded a safety, Justin Winn hit Michael Tomczyk once again for a 38-yard touchdown and with the convert, a 22-18 lead.  In the fourth quarter, the Stallions’ defensive adjustments finally paid off and excellent offensive time management salted the victory in a total team effort.

The Stallions face long odds in the Championship against a powerful Burlington Stampeders squad.  The game is this Saturday at 2pm at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton which is the home of the McMaster University football team.
